Long Ring Finger and Prostate Cancer Risk

Long Ring Finger and Prostate Cancer Risk – A study has shown that men with long ring fingers could be three times more likely to develop prostate cancer. Doctors have found that men whose ring fingers extend much farther than their index finger present more of a risk. The findings were conclusive, and now doctors may begin taking a longer look at the hands of men when assessing prostate cancer risk.
In the study, blood tests confirmed that men with long ring fingers, primarily on their right hand, have higher levels of prostate specific antigen, which is also known as PSA. The chemical is found in high levels in the blood when cancer is present.

The right hand was used in the study because often times the ring finger is longer on the right hand. The results that were found in the study are just one example of a long line of studies that link the length of fingers to men’s health. Researchers currently have no idea why the connection is there; just simply that it is there to begin with.
Most studies that deal with linking the length of fingers to men’s health show benefits for individuals with longer fingers. One study showed that individuals with long fingers have a reduced risk of heart disease, and increased fertility.
It is interesting that there is a connection between the length of a finger and the overall health of an individual. More studies will have to be done to find the connection, but some believe that the long ring finger is caused by increased levels of testosterone in the womb.

I have fairly long fingers over-all and my ring fingers on both hands are longer than the index fingers but not significantly so; maybe 1/4 inch. I am 64 yrs old and the last time I had my PSA checked (about 3 yrs ago), I was told it was equal to that of a 16 yr old. I also have an exceptionally high sperm count (don’t know why or what that signifies) and my prostate seems to be in tip-top shape although a bit firmer on one side than the other and I have none of the normal signs of prostate issues. So, I’m hoping my over-all long fingers trump the longer ring finger issue. Is there some age by which, if you haven’t gotten prostate cancer, you’re not likely to?
