Ecstasy to Help Traumatized Soldiers?
Ecstasy to Help Traumatized Soldiers? – Ecstasy, the drug that is also known as MDMA has been found to reduce fear in traumatized soldiers. The trial only studied 20 different patients, but the results were clear enough to allow the US team to secure approval for a larger study of military veterans who have been traumatized.
The trial excluded patients who had a history of psychosis and addiction. During the study, patients were given eight-hour therapy sessions that were scheduled a few weeks apart from one another. Eight individuals were given a placebo, and twelve of them were given a monitored dose of ecstasy.
Two months later, 10 of the 12 patients who were given ecstasy responded positively to the treatment. By comparison, only two of the eight individuals that were given the placebo pills said that they had noticed an improvement.
The study showed that there were no adverse effects from use of the drug. The study was funded by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, but researchers said that they would be following up with patients to ensure that there have been no negative long term effects.
Before the drug was used recreationally, it was used quite often to boost the effectiveness of therapy. Often times individuals who are on ecstasy are more open with their emotions, and are more willing to share the things that are truly bothering them. One researcher said that MDMA allows the patient to reach the optimal zone for therapy, and keeps them from being overwhelmed by feelings.
